Tanzania's Highlights
Big cats, the big five, and a big chance to witness the incredible great wildebeest migration puts Serengeti National Park at the top of any safari-goer’s list. The Serengeti is known to have a vast number of animals, complete with sightings of large herds of plains game as well as predators seen on most game drives.
The Serengeti National Park has a terrain made up of mostly vast savannah in the western section, occasional acacia trees breaking the landscape, and a more hilly woodland area sets the scene in the north
Within the Ngorongoro conservation area there is a myriad of animals to be spotted with over 500 bird species recorded. In Lake Magadi the beautiful sight of pink flamingos paints the landscape and during the calving season between December and March, the wildebeest migrate south to the Ngorongoro conservation area.
The Ngorongoro conservation area comprises grasslands and open savannas, with woodlands forming near the forested banks of the Ngorongoro Crater. Popular parks and reserves that fall within the Ngorongoro conservation area include the Serengeti National Park and the Great Rift Valley.
Animal sightings in the Lake Manyara National Park are always exciting, from zebras and giraffes to vervet monkeys and large herds of elephants. The park is known for its tree-climbing lions and flocks of brillant flamingos that wash the lake pink. Watch hippos at play and take the opportunity to do a night drive and spot porcupines and genets.
Lake Manyara’s cool waters make up two-thirds of Lake Manyara National Park. The surrounding land mass is a blend of grassland and floodplains with woodlands meeting rocky mountain escarpments.
The Tarangire National Park is located near the Great Rift Valley, close to the Masai Steppe in Tanzania’s north, forming part of the country’s northern safari circuit.
Known for its baobab trees, the Tarangire is a scenic wonder with scattered trees over the swamps and wooded areas, with valleys rising beside the winding Tarangire River. The swamps welcome both snakes and a plethora of birdlife alike.
Tarangire National Park is known to have one of the largest elephant populations in Tanzania and it is home to the “Big Five”. Chances of spotting lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino, along with the elephants is very possible during a game drive. The Tarangire River attracts a lot of predators so sightings of popular favorites are likely.
Though often overlooked, this small park presents a variety of experiences for curious visitors. Home to the world’s largest population of giraffe, this versatile reserve presents numerous hiking and exploring possibilities.
Ever go on a canoe safari? The seven Momella lakes in the park, all a different shade of algae green or blue, offer opportunities to sail and explore. From your floating perch you can spot flamingoes and further out on the shore, giraffe, zebra, dik-dik and warthog.
With its easy vibe, lush green hills and woodlands, the park lends itself to walking safaris. You’ll find great stretches of forest hosting blue and colobus monkeys. And several trails will bring you to Mt. Meru, the second highest summit in Tanzania, the fourth highest in Africa.
